Far too often, we think of beds as one size fits all.

Sure, we might find ourselves occasionally laying on an especially uncomfortable bed – perhaps one that is too hard or completely unsupportive – but it’s all too easy to neglect the importance of finding the right type of bed for your needs.

Everybody is different and that means there is a wide variety of beds of all different shapes and sizes to choose from.

Why is it so important to find the right bed?

Over the long term, having a bed that isn’t the right fit can have severe effects which go far beyond the frustration of a single restless night.

First off, it can cause issues with your posture and, as a result, cause back pain which can lead to discomfort long after you’ve gotten up.

But perhaps most importantly of all, it can cause a person to lose sleep, which can affect everything from cognitive ability to signs of ageing.

We all know just how important a good night’s sleep is.

So how do we go about knowing which type of bed is best to facilitate one?

We’re going to look at four very different types of bed so you can get an idea of what might suit you best.

Pocket Sprung Mattress

One of the most popular types of mattress, the trick here is that the springs are sewn within their own individual fabric pockets.

This makes them suitable for couples, as the individual springs prevent the other person’s weight from affecting your support.

They also stay cooler than memory foam mattresses, which is important if heat is a factor in your struggle to drift off at night.

They are also the most common type of mattress for orthopaedic beds, with their versatility in firmness options making them perfect for tailoring your bed to your own body.

Open Spring Mattress

Unfortunately, when it comes to beds, you often get what you pay for.

While open spring mattresses may be cheap, they also aren’t suitable for everyone.

Unlike the pocket sprung mattress, this uses a continuous coil, meaning that shifts between people in the bed can cause serious sleep disruption.

They also offer less support.

If you’re on a budget and are looking for a bed for only one person who doesn’t have great difficulty sleeping, then this might be a suitable and affordable option.

Memory Foam Mattress

This type of mattress moulds itself to your body’s shape, offering maximum support that is especially tailored to your unique body shape for maximum support.

The most common complaint for these mattresses is that they can get too hot during the night, which for some people can be distracting.

However, for many they offer the perfect night’s sleep.

This is especially the case for those looking for hypoallergenic mattresses, as memory foam is far better suited to this than either of the sprung options.

For those who suffer from allergies, this can be the number one issue affecting their sleep and memory foam can offer the perfect solution.

Latex Mattress

Although the latex mattress has many of the benefits of the memory foam mattress, it really is its own beast.

One thing it does have in common is the way it provides great options for those looking for a hypoallergenic mattress, as both this and memory foam are superior choices to the coiled options for allergy sufferers.

It also offers great support and makes a wonderful compromise for those who find the coiled options unsuitable but want to avoid the heat issues of memory foam.

On the other hand, some people find certain latex mattresses to be too firm.

This comes down to a matter of preference, although the latter issue can be solved by choosing a latex mattress with a lower impression load deflection.

Make sure you do a little research around this if firm beds are a negative for you. The other issues with latex mattress are cost.

This is a more expensive material but more than worth it if this sounds like the right fit for you.

Finally, there’s the weight of it: these beds are extremely heavy and that may cause some practical issues if you wish to turn or move it for example.
